* £829 is the average redress figure estimated by the FCA for its proposed motor-finance scheme. It is not a promise of the amount you will receive — whether you get any compensation, and how much, depends entirely on your individual circumstances, your agreement and the final FCA redress scheme criteria. Many claims result in no compensation. Recover My PCP is a trading style of Iridium Law Limited (trading as ADG Law), SRA-regulated solicitors.

Why can millions of drivers now claim compensation?
A major Supreme Court ruling in August 2025 held that a car-finance agreement can, in certain circumstances, create an unfair relationship where commission was not properly disclosed — even when the interest rate stayed the same. The issue centres on high or hidden commissions that customers were never told about. Because of this, drivers who financed a vehicle between April 2007 and November 2024 may be eligible for compensation, depending on their individual circumstances and the final FCA scheme criteria.

Why your car finance might be unfair
Inflated interest rate
Some lenders added extra interest without a clear reason, meaning you may have paid more than you should have.
Hidden commissions
Many customers were not told that brokers or dealers were earning large commissions on their finance deal.
Misleading sales advice
Sales staff sometimes pushed deals that weren’t in the customer’s best interest or didn’t explain key details properly.
Locked-in finance deals
Some agreements tied customers to specific terms or products without making the restrictions clear.
Latest FCA update
The FCA extended the deadline for motor-finance firms to respond to discretionary-commission complaints to 4 December 2025. It also set out an industry-wide compensation scheme covering car finance taken out between April 2007 and November 2024, with average payouts estimated at around £829 per agreement. As of 2 July 2026, that scheme has been legally challenged and parts of it have been suspended (see the latest update below).
What is the FCA redress scheme?
The FCA is proposing a formal compensation scheme for consumers who were mis-sold car finance — particularly where commission arrangements between lenders and brokers were not properly disclosed. The consultation period has closed and the sector is awaiting the FCA’s final decision.
Latest update (2 July 2026): the FCA’s redress scheme has been legally challenged and parts of it have been suspended. The case is due to be heard in December 2026 or February 2027, and if the scheme is upheld and not appealed the FCA expects payments to begin in 2027. The FCA has suggested average redress of around £829 per agreement. It is open to you to wait for the FCA scheme rather than claim now — you can also complain directly to your lender for free.
